… to Arbeiterwohlfahrt (AWO) Schwaben, one of the major regional charities in south-western Bavaria.

Established in 1927, AWO Schwaben provides charitable services in cooperation with both governmental and communal administration as well as other major charities to anyone requiring assistance.

As an independent and religiously neutral society proud of its origin in the social-democratic movement, AWO lobbies for governmental welfare politics.

Based in Stadtbergen near Augsburg, AWO Schwaben mainly operates 24 care homes for the elderly, 37 childcare facilities and a recreational facility for families in south-western Bavaria. Other AWO operations include a disability help centre in Neuburg an der Donau, assisted living facilities for patients suffering from mental disorders, two institutions for drug rehabilitation and several outpatient and day care facilities. AWO also manages counselling agencies such as the „Zentrum für Aidsarbeit Schwaben“ that is always available for any HIV- and AIDS-related enquiries.

AWO facilities provide guaranteed jobs and training opportunities to 3,000 staff.

The AWO Schwaben society means some 10,000 members in about 100 local branches. 3,000 members actually volunteer for helping their fellow citizens in childcare, in clubs for senior citizens, at social facilities or share rich experience with governmental boards, acting as representatives of AWO society.

AWO is a democratically organized society. Volunteers acting as board of directors bear the entire responsibility. AWO Schwaben and four other regional AWO societies form the Bavarian AWO trust (AWO Landesverband Bayern) which defines itself primarily as an advocacy group in social policy.
